postpartum

The word postpartum refers to the time after birth. It can also be referred to as the postnatal period which includes the first 6 weeks after childbirth. It is a critical period for both mother and baby and great care should be taken to ensure they are both thriving. There will be many changes to adjust to during this period both physically and mentally. Below are tips on how to take care of yourself and your baby postpartum.

 Tips on postpartum care

  1. Rest

You will be pretty tired after having your baby. As all moms know, the maternity journey is not always a walk in the park. Make sure you get as much rest as you can even though this may seem impossible with so many things to do and a baby to take care of. Sleep whenever your baby falls asleep and get someone to help with the baby if you can.

  1. Breastfeeding

For the baby’s health, experts recommend that babies are breastfed within the first hour of birth. They should also be exclusively breastfed for the first six months. This will strengthen the baby’s immune system and they will be well equipped to fight off disease. If your baby is healthy, you will also be happy.

  1. Postnatal visits

For the health of both baby and mother, it is important to go for postnatal visits to the doctor. These postpartum visits will help doctors evaluate both mother’s and baby’s health to make sure they are doing well. The child will also get their immunization during this time.

  1. Healthy eating

Your baby will be feeding on what you eat, especially before they are weaned. It is therefore important to ensure that you are well fed with healthy food so that you can have enough breastmilk for your baby. Have lots of fluids and a balanced diet.

The postpartum period is crucial for both mother and baby. Take proper care of yourself during this time to ensure both your health and your baby’s well being.
